Mythological Scene

Jacques Lipchitz 1911

This is one of Lipchitz's earliest works and presents the rhythm of intertwining that would later be characteristic of all his sculpture.
The composition of the plaster bas-relief reflects the strong influence of Shiite art, which the sculptor was fascinated by following a visit to the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

The work dates back to 1911 when, after his first trip to Paris, Lipchitz returned to Lithuania to see his parents and complete the documents for exemption from military service.
The frontality of the work and the female and male nudes echo the visual thinking of the sculptor Aristide Maillol, reflected among other things in the balance of the scene and the bucolic sense.
