Renato d'Anjou and Isabella of Lorraine

Franz Adolf von Stürler XIX sec. d.C.

The small painting in perfect “troubadour” style depicts the lovers Renato d'Anjou, King of Naples, and Isabella of Lorraine in a scene set (probably shortly after their marriage in 1420) in an interior that mixes late medieval and pre-Renaissance elements. Representative of the neo-Gothic taste of the time, this painting includes a depiction, on the left, of a Virgin Mary and Child, which can be discerned behind a heavy green damask curtain.

The painter von Stürler, a pupil of Ingres in Paris and together with Luigi Mussini founder of a private drawing school in Florence, was always engaged in advocating a return to the educational methods of the old art workshops during his long stay in the city. The originality of this painting lies in its purist interpretation of the decorative solutions proposed by examples of Tuscan Gothic, in other words, revisiting 14th- and 15th-century art.
