Pegasus (Birth of the Muses)

The patinated plaster relief depicts the mythological figure of Pegasus, the winged horse, and simultaneously the birth of the Muses. It constitutes an effective visual synthesis of the moment of artistic creation.

Jacques Lipchitz was always fascinated by Pegasus, the winged creature who, according to Greek mythology, was responsible for the spring of Hippocrene, from which the Muses emerged. Also part of the Lipchitz donation is the preparatory plaster cast for the sculpture Bellerophon Taming Pegasus, housed in the atrium of the City Hall.
