The “heroic” male bust depicts the Irish poet and musician Thomas Moore, best remembered for the Irish melodies, with music by J. S. Stevenson (published between 1807 and 1834) and as the author of the biography of Lord Byron, published by Murray in 1830.

Owned by the City of Prato since 1957 thanks to a bequest by the Pianetti family, the bust with its strong naturalistic vein, characteristically rendered by Bartolini, was initially identified first as a portrait of Metternich, then of the Roman-trained painter Vincenzo Chialli.
