Pope Pius IX

Lorenzo Bartolini 1847

The portrait of Pope Pius IX represents one of the artist's last works. The piece dates back to the spring of 1847, when the sculptor went to Rome wishing to portray the Pope, who, however, granted him few sittings - something Bartolini regrets in one of his letters.
