Pasquale Romanelli, father of the sculptor Raphael and grandfather of Romano, was the progenitor of the famous Tuscan Romanelli family of artists. The workshop inherited by Bartolini, located in a deconsecrated church, remained active until 1887. Two other identical marble busts of Bartolini exist in the Collection housed at the Alberti Gallery in Prato and with the Romanelli heirs.
The image that the pupil conveys of his beloved master is not far removed from the Portrait of Lorenzo Bartolini painted by Franz Adolf von Stürler nine years earlier and exhibited in the Palazzo Pretorio Museum.
