The portrait of Lorenzo Bartolini was made in 1845 by his friend painter Franz Adolf von Stürler during his stay in Florence. It is a copy of the portrait made to Bartolini by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in 1820 that is now in the Louvre Museum.

In the artwork where Bartolini is portrayed heroically, according to an iconography dear to him as a fervent supporter of Napoleon Bonaparte, the sculptor's physical presence is emphasised. He conveys a certain strength and self-assertion to the observer through the firm and decisive expression on his face. Von Stürler in particular uses deep shadows to highlight the bust, volumes, among which Dante's name can be seen, and a stylus.
