Formerly identified with the Tuscan tenor Ermanno Picchi, the marble was purchased by the State in 1978 from antiquarians Sergio and Patrizio Giaconi and later given to the Prato museum for safekeeping.
Despite the heroic cut, the torso has a rigidly classical approach and is, as in the case of the portrait of Lady Sidney Morgan, unfinished, which can be seen when observing the back of the head, roughly treated and with the curls of the hair barely outlined.
