Sage Fuller Cowles was born in Paris and moved to Minnesota in 1953, after studying at the School of American Ballet in New York and earning a degree in Art History from the University of Wisconsin. She married her husband in 1952. John Cowles was the owner of the Minneapolis Star Tribune from 1935; he also served on the board of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, which organised a retrospective of Lipchitz's work in 1954.
