This portrait bust is a post mortem effigy of Giorgio Gallesio, the author of Pomona Italiana, ossia trattato degli alberi da frutta (Treatise On Fruit Trees, published in 1817-39).

Gallesio was an eclectic man: poet, historian, civil servant, traveller and scientist. He began his career in the judiciary and was awarded numerous honours, including the title of Count. His work Pomona Italiana was an unprecedented publishing venture at the time, not least because it was accompanied by colour representations of the fruits, entrusted by Gallesio to selected artists.
