Sepulchral bas-relief for the funeral monument to Thomas Wilson

Lorenzo Bartolini XIX sec. d.C.

The bas-relief with four figures was executed for the tomb of the English colonel Thomas Wilson Patten, “preparatory for a monument that went to England”, as recorded in the studio's inventory drawn up after the sculptor's death. This work, like the Monument to Nicolai Demidoff, is clear evidence of how international customers were increasingly interested in Bartolini's decorative and ornamental statuary production.

The subject of this funeral allegory would represent, in the centre of the scene, a vase containing the soul of the deceased. On the left is History, crying and comforting a woman who, inconsolable, leans against the urn, while represented on the right would be Valour and Youth in male guise. However, according to further studies, the figures are none other than family members of the deceased, who died in 1819 in Naples - as can be seen from the inscription on the funeral monument in England, at St. Elphin's Church in Warrington.
