Scholars have identified the man portrayed differently, some believing him to be Von Stürler himself, a French man of letters known as Monsieur Claret, Jean Francois Gilibert, a pupil of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and friend of both the painter and Lorenzo Bartolini, and, more recently, a certain Monsieur Clarisson.
This type of portrait is typical of the Restoration era. The influence of Ingres is evident here, for example in the extreme realism of the details and the intimist aspect of the investigation of the face and its expressions.
