Virgin Mary with Child and Saint John

Francesco Brina XVI sec. d.C./ terzo quarto

Audio description of the artwork

00:00 / 00:00

Inspired by Raphael's Bridgewater Madonna, this artwork seems to derive from the painting of the same subject by Zanobi Poggini, exhibited here, with the addition of the appearance of Saint John behind the Virgin, who seems to spy on the scene in amusement. The iridescent colours, the alterations of certain parts of the body, the suspended and decidedly mannerist character place the artwork in the circle of Michele di Ridolfo Tosini.

Palazzo Pretorio Museum

Already attributed to Niccolò Betti and later to an indefinite master of the same circle, the artwork seems very similar to the style of Francesco del Brina, due to the characteristic round eyes, the almost articulated bodies, and the harsh and vivid colour tones. These peculiarities are partly found in the panel with the same subject, attributed to him, exhibited on the second floor of the museum, in which the supple movement of the Child and the sweetness of the Virgin Mary's face are similar. However, other characteristics could possibly point towards Baccio Tosini, a still little-known painter, who expressed himself with diluted and iridescent colours in tones dominated by pinks and oranges.
