Madonna and Child with Saints Peter, Paul, Margaret and Catherine of Alexandria

Bottega di Jacopo di Cione 1360

The panel depicting the Madonna and Child in Majesty, flanked by the four Saints Peter, Paul, Margaret and Catherine of Alexandria, is probably the central part of a small triptych or portable altarpiece used for private devotion, the doors of which have been destroyed or lost.

The work had previously been attributed to the Maestro dell'Infanzia di Cristo (Master of the Infancy of Christ), an artist associated with the style of the Orcagnesque workshop, whose eponymous work is a panel depicting three episodes from the Infancy of Christ, preserved in the Florentine Galleries. Today, scholars agree, based on stylistic considerations, in attributing this small work to the workshop of Jacopo di Cione, brother and collaborator of Andrea di Nardo, active in the second half of the 14th century.
