Madonna and Child with Saints Francis, Mark the Evangelist, Clare and Catherine of Alexandria

Luca Signorelli e bottega 1515

Audio description of the artwork

It is believed that the tondo, decorated with a fine frame carved with plant festoons, belongs to the late production of Signorelli, in which he used to entrust a portion of the execution of his paintings to collaborators in his flourishing workshop. The work may be reminiscent of Flemish paintings, especially because of the motif of the revolving ribbon, the “roll”, which marks the end of the artwork, like a heraldic emblem or magic sign, symbolising eternity.

The multi-handed nature of the work is reflected in the discontinuous quality of the composition and some repaintings that appear throughout the drawing. The Flemish motif of the ribbon is similar to designs created by Filippino Lippi.

The work was donated to the Museum by Paolo Vanni from Prato in 1871. However, its origin is unknown, although it can be assumed that it belonged to a Franciscan church, given the presence of Saints Francis and Clare.
