AHHH

Vinicio Berti 1962

This painting is one of the ten works that came into the municipal collections in 2007 thanks to Maria Pia Liberia Pini, companion and sole heir of the painter who died in 1991. Remaining the owner of the artist's paintings and certain of expressing his wishes, she decided to donate this important collection of paintings to the City of Prato. The donation took place following the exhibition dedicated to Vinicio Berti that was held that same year in the municipal spaces known as the “Antiche Stanze di Santa Caterina”, under the condition that the paintings were exhibited in a place open to the public.

The work is situated during a period in which Berti attempted reconstruction within Abstractionism, inserting the dimension of the contemporary into the works, even with a denunciatory tone. An example of this is “AHHH”, one of the paintings inspired by the Hiroshima tragedy. Here, the letters A for Atom and H for Hydrogen, drawn in thick red brushstrokes against a yellow background, appear to be gripped in a black and white toothed vice, becoming the expression of an “atomic scream”.
