The painting, also known as Mater amabilis because of the tender smile, is a derivation of one of the compositions by Giovan Battista Salvi, known as “il Sassoferrato”. A close-up of the Madonna in adoration is depicted, but the Child is absent.

There are numerous versions of this painting from Prato both in Italy and abroad, such as those in the Galleria Doria in Rome, the Galleria Estense in Modena, the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, the National Gallery in London and the Granet Museum in Aix-en-Provence.
