This work, painted in 1748 by the little-known painter Van Orlen, is an example of a Dutch still life, the only one with animals in the Museum of Palazzo Pretorio.

The painting is characterised by an oily paint, typical of the Dutch sphere, and by a rather accentuated chiaroscuro, which aims to illuminate the four pigeons, two with twigs in their mouths and two crouching. The painter shows a rare refinement in light and delicate colours, an influence of the Bolognese painters. In the repository the pendant with Dead Birds.
