This small-format work, painted on copper, was made as a pendant to the other Still Life with Vegetables by Jan Van Kessel, with which it forms part of the Martini collection, on view on the second mezzanine of the museum.

Characterised by a meticulous search for the natural datum and the meticulous, almost scientific description of objects and fruits, it shows a characteristic aspect of the Flemish painter, famous for this genre of small-format paintings, much loved by connoisseurs of the 17th and 18th century.  
In the past, this painting, like the other, was attributed to the painter Jan “Velvet” Brueghel, Van Kessel's uncle.
