The three-quarter portrait of Peter Leopold of Lorraine is a work of the Florentine painter Stefano Gaetano Neri, as a tribute to the Grand Duke. The latter was responsible for the collection of the first group of works of art from the monasteries suppressed in 1788. These works would have formed the first civic art gallery of Prato in the Town Hall.

Commissioned by the civic community, the portrait was originally part of the Salone del Consiglio painting collection in the Prato Town Hall. This pose of Peter Leopold is associated with Pompeo Batoni's best-known portraiture tradition, as well as with the English portrait, where characters (in an often courtly pose) are shown in front of ruins or striking backgrounds.

Neri was also appreciated as a copyist. He also made a copy -  for the Town Hall - of St. Catherine de’ Ricci adoring the Crucifix, from the original seventeenth-century painting by Lorenzo Lippi.
