The pose of the Virgin Mary and Child emphasises the humanity of the Mother and the Son, who is portrayed in his childlike nudity, indicating the earthly nature of the incarnate Christ. The clarity of expression and affable humanity express feelings of popular devotion.
The model of the Madonna Lactans may be reminiscent of the famous 14th-century prototype by Andrea and Nino Pisano, preserved in the Museo di San Matteo in Pisa.
