Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine and Saints

Giacomo e Giulio Francia (Giacomo e Giulio Raibolini), Maestro della Madonna Parrish XVI sec. d.C./ prima metà

This picture for private devotion, probably of monastic origin, can be compared to the group of works by the so-called “Master of the Madonna Parrish”, often associated with the painter Giulio Francia. It depicts the Virgin Mary and Child with St Catherine, together with St Joseph and St Bernard.

From the Emilia area, the painting is inspired by Raphael's mild classicism. The theme of the Mystical Marriage could perhaps recall the entry of novices into the monastery as brides of Christ. The panel is attributed to the “Master of the Parrish Madonna” because it has elements in common with his other works, such as the elongated faces, the large melancholic eyes and the contrite tone of the composition.
