The painting was commissioned in 1656 to Balassi, one of the most sensitive interpreters of Florentine 17th century art, through the Oratorian priest Lorenzo Calvi, his agent and confessor. It was intended for the hall of Palazzo Comunale and realized by the painter as companion of Madonna and Child with St. Dominic.

L'opera commissionata dalla Comunità civica doveva celebrare, insieme all'altro dipinto, il titolo di città concesso a Prato dal granduca Ferdinando II de' Medici nel 1653. La scelta di rappresentare san Giuseppe è determinata dal fatto che il santo era protettore della città e patrono della potente arte dei falegnami che aveva il suo centro in piazza Mercatale. La messa per la festa del santo, dichiarata di precetto nel 1621, è ricordata dal salmo "IUSTUS UT PALMA FLOREBIT", cui alludono probabilmente i simboli tenuti dai cherubini in alto: il giglio e la palma, mentre in basso troviamo gli arnesi tipici della falegnameria.

La cornice fu intagliata dal fiorentino Adamo Guglielmi successivamente alla realizzazione, nel 1688.
