Saint Romulus and the Angel

The work is attributed to Domenico Salvi, son of the painter Vincenzo, and depicts St. Romulus wearing a red vestment inspired by the 16th-century vestment of St. Stephen, preserved in the treasury of Prato Cathedral. The large angel figure shows the saint the way to heaven and martyrdom.

The painting belongs to the very oldest core of the municipal collections and became included in them following the religious suppressions at the end of the 18th century. Commissioned by the Opera delle Carceri - with a connection to the celebrations for the feast of the saint - the work has as its pendant the Saint Joseph interceding with the Virgin Mary on behalf of the Souls of Purgatory, preserved in the Prato sanctuary of Santa Maria della Pietà.
