Triumph of Fruit

Carlo Mainieri XVII sec. d.C./ seconda metà

The two Triumphs of Fruit with grapes, melons, pears, pomegranates and figs, characterised by calligraphic meticulousness, by Carlo Mainieri, are part of the Martini Collection in the Museum of Palazzo Pretorio.

The coarse brushstrokes, the extreme minuteness of the fruit details and the exquisite surfaces of the two Triumphs are influenced by Flemish painting. The profusion and redundancy of fruit arranged in cascades can be traced back to the late Roman and Neapolitan Baroque tradition. These fruit trophies can indeed be compared to the works of the Neapolitan Giovan Battista Ruoppolo and Michelangelo Pace, active in Rome between 1658 and 1665.
Initially the two works were attributed to Pietro Navarra, whose Still Life with Fruit is exhibited in the same Museum Collection, together with those by Jan Van Kessel and the Flowers by Franz Werner von Tamm, Ludovico Stern and Gasparo Lopez.
