Holy Family with Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine

Giovan Battista Naldini, Giovanni Balducci 1578

Audio description of the artwork

00:00 / 00:00

This portable altar, probably realized for the prayers of some noble lay sister, has a central panel with the Holy Family and replicates, with a few variations, a typical composition by Naldini. It is an extremely refined work. In the side panels the two Dominican saints, Dominic and Catherine of Siena, are attributed to the disciple Giovanni Balducci. The two figures differ from the delicate chromatism of the master, characterized by theVirgin’s  red gown that stands out against the ochre pervading the scene, showing a fine light and shade research which nearly turns into monochrome.
