The subject is familiar to the painter, who portrays his father's apprentices. The iconic fixed nature of the portraits originates from the suggestion of the “primitive” artists, in particular Giotto, Masaccio and Piero della Francesca. Close to Ardengo Soffici and a friend of Arrigo Del Rigo, the Frenchmen Chardin, Corot, Renoir and above all Cézanne were also sources of study and reflection for Brogi.
Recurring motifs in his works, as on this occasion, include episodes and events from his own life. Brogi himself recalls in his memoirs: “Here in Prato, especially in the neighbourhood, seeing that I sometimes neglected my work in the bakery to go out and paint, people used to think I was a bit crazy”.
The Gino Brogi Fund was donated to the City of Prato by the artist's family in 1991.
