View of Piazza del Duomo

Anonimo XVI sec. d.C./ ultimo quarto

Almost an ante litteram photograph of rare sensitivity, the tempera shows the Piazza del Duomo in Prato animated by a few figures, including a stonemason busily repairing the stones of the pavement, with a chronological slant of Nordic style.

It encompasses the symbols of religious power: the Piazza del Duomo, the Palazzo dei Proposti, the Cathedral - at that time the Parish Church - of Santo Stefano and the oratory of San Giovanni, with its gabled roof, which was used as the Baptistery at the time.
A perfect example of the Flemish school's ability to portray reality, the painting can be dated to the end of the 16th century and can be attributed to the circle of Giovanni Stradano, the author of many views painted inside Palazzo Vecchio in Florence
