The Harvest

Maria Luigia Raggi XVIII sec. d.C./ seconda metà

This view now belongs in the catalogue of Maria Luigia Raggi, due to the light and luminous style, characterised by clear skies and uneven clouds, but in the past it has been attributed, like its pendant the Grape Harvest, to a Roman or French painter working in Rome, with influences drawn from Van Wittel and Dutch painting in general.

The painting, in tempera on paper, presents a style of light, muted colours and vibrant lines, which links it with a series of small, purely decorative views. The four figures - two men and two women cutting and harvesting grain - that we see on the median plane, indicate a dependence on a similar composition by Marco Ricci, shown in a print by Giuliano Giampiccoli, which must have ensured its wide circulation.
