Palazzo Pretorio
This room, which directly overlooks the Town Square, has been identified as the ancient “chamber” of the Town Hall, i.e. the space in which the latter's arms, weights, and measuring devices were kept during medieval times.
This is one of the oldest areas of the building, as evidenced by the early 14th-century fresco (recognised as the work of Prato artist Bettino di Corsino) on the wall. It depicts the Madonna and Child Enthroned, flanked by Saints John the Evangelist and Stephen. Over the centuries, this room has served various purposes and undergone changes. For example, it became the headquarters of the Monte di Pietà (Mount of Piety), an institution founded in 1476 and housed in the north wing of the palace. Today, a interactive and tactile model of the Palazzo Pretorio has been placed here, highlighting its historical and architectural events, with audio and video content, also translated into Italian Sign Language and IS (International Sign), making history and art accessible to a wider audience.
