Alessandro Franchi's cartoons and Lorenzo Bartolini's drawings
After climbing the staircase to the top floor, a first room houses a selection of drawings by the great Prato-born sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini and cartoons by painter Alessandro Franchi, who was also born in Prato.
These two valuable graphic collections were donated to the Municipality of Prato by two different donations. The collection of drawings by Lorenzo Bartolini (one of the most prominent Italian sculptors of the 19th century) is made up of a hundred or so preparatory studies for sepulchral monuments, decorative studies and caricatures, and was donated to the Municipality in 1957 by the Pianetti family, the artist's heirs.
A multimedia application provides access to the most significant drawings in the collection. However, the other collection relates to Alessandro Franchi, a Prato artist who was one of the leading figures in Tuscan artwork during the second half of the 19th and early 20th century. The preparatory cartoons on display here were acquired by the municipal collections in 1911 at the express request of the painter. Many other preparatory cartoons for frescoes, as well as about three hundred drawings, are kept in the museum's storerooms.
